REBAUDIOSIDE A, [CAS 58543-16-1] is the more potent and most pleasant tasting of the two major principles obtained from the STEVIOL GLYCOSIDES, sweeteners  extracted from the leaves of the indigenous Paraguayan plant Stevia Rebaudiana and used for centuries by the inhabitants of that Latin American country. STEVIOSIDE, as it has been generically known and widely accepted now holds a dominant position over sugar after more than thirty years of use in Japan, China, Latin America and other world markets.

In the early 1980’s Andard-Mount anticipated the future of steviosides and using its research and production facilities in the Far East started negotiations, lasting for over four years, with UK and EU authorities in order to allow the sale of this sweetener in Europe, to no avail.

In 2006 the World Health Organisation (WHO) performed a thorough evaluation of recent experimental studies of stevia extracts conducted on animals and humans and concluded that “stevioside and rebaudioside A are not genotoxic in vitro or in vivo and that the genotoxicity of steviol and some of its oxidatives in vitrois not expressed in vivo.” The report also found no evidence of carcinogenic activity and also suggested the possibility of health benefits, in that “stevioside has shown some evidence of pharmacological effects in patients with hypertension or with type-2 diabetes.” 

As the eventual result of this evaluation, the USFDA stated in December 2008 that Rebaudioside A is considered safe as a general purpose sweetener, a fact well determined by Andard-Mount – and millions of users – over many previous years.
