METHOTREXATE, [CAS 59-05-2] used in the treatment of auto-immune diseases; its action is the inhibition of folic acid metabolism. Originally used to treat a wide variety of cancers, it remains pivotal where many neoplastic conditions are concerned including lymphoblastic leukaemia.
Following the establishment of the first cancer research centre in the USA, as early as 1953 the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) gave its approval to Methotrexate for use as an oncology drug. Methotrexate is generally used – frequently in combination with Misoprostol (also available from Andard-Mount) – as an abortifacient as well as in the treatment of ectopic pregnancies; other diseases where this product continues to have an important role includes psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis, scleroderma and Crohn’s disease.
