PROSTAGLANDINS An Outline and Summary of Therapeutic Applications

Prostaglandins are highly potent substances that are produced as required by cell membranes in most body tissues and are synthesized from fatty acids in mammals as well as in lower animals. Many prostaglandins have been identified and these divided generally into three groups – series 1, 2 and 3, being normally subject to rapid degradation and are thus short acting substances.
Prostaglandins have a variety of functions with the choices of medical application continually widening; some being that they:
• Relax muscles in blood vessel walls and so reduce blood pressure, acting as strong vasodilators.
• Stimulate uterine muscle contractions at term, induce therapeutic abortions.
• Offer an important role in either inhibiting or enhancing the body’s inflammatory responses.
• Boost activation of bone re-absorption in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and control substances involved in transmission of nerve impulses.
• Regulate metabolism rates in various tissues and assist in the body’s defences against infection.
