HEPARIN is still in global clinical use since 1937 following extensive trials proving it to be an effective blood anticoagulant, which was also safe and easily available. Heparin is effective in the prevention of pulmonary emboli and deep vein thrombosis and is applied parenterally as degradation occurs when taken orally.
The use of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) has for some time now, allowed a single daily dose and so avoids where appropriate, a continuous application of the drug. There continues to be a very considerable potential for the development of heparin related compounds for the treatment of a number of diseases to add to their present use and clinical trials have been initiated in conditions involving Asthma, Arthritis and respiratory distress syndrome in adults.
